Lafond Pinot Noir SRH 2013

FYND! **** – Allt om Vin nr 10/2015

Seven Clones of Pinot Noir are present in this wine made of 100% Pinot Noir which come from 6 different blocks in the Lafond and Burning Creek Vineyards. Eighteen different fermenters were used. This mixture and blend allows for layering of complexity and brings out the character of Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir; elegance with a structural balance, fruit concentration and length.

The Santa Rita Hills is a small appellation at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley that has gained national recognition for its Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay. The Valley runs west to east, opening a gap in the coastal range, allowing the late afternoon ocean fog to roll in where it lingers until early morning. The surrounding hills trap the fog before it is dissipated in the wider Santa Ynez Valley. The fog cools the vines from the day’s summer heat and it is this combination of warm days and cool nights that gives the wine its complexity as well as providing acidity to give it structure. Picked at night to take advantage of this coolness, the grapes are processed the next morning, as cooler grapes are firmer and suffer less damage in handling.

Awards:

  • Fynd! **** – Allt om Vin nr 10/2015. “Mycket diskret, elegant och klassiskt hållen pinotdoft. Ren, fruktig, fatig smak i omedelbar och infriande, tydligt senskördad stil.” (BARGAIN! **** by Swedish Wine Magazine Allt om Vin nr 10/2015)
  • 91 Points – Wine Spectator 2015 “Combines delicacy with finesse, featuring a subtle mix of candied apple, strawberry, blueberry and wilted rose notes with fine-grained earth laced tannins that linger. Drink now through 2023.”
  • 91 Points – Wine Enthusiast 2015 “Raspberry, dark slate, gravel and a bit of shiitake mushroom entertain the nose on this bottling by the higher-end sister brand of Santa Barbara Winery. Both richly juicy and brightly acidic on the palate, it offers flavors of boysenberry and sagebrush, making for a very lively wine.”
  • Double Gold – The 50 Best/California Pinot Noir 2015
  • Double Gold Medal 2014 – Women’s International Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal 2014 – Orange County Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal 2014 – Texas Consumer Wine Judging

Lafond Winery & Vineyards, California

Award Winning Wines from Sta. Rita Hills

Lafond Winery & Vineyards (also owner of Santa Barbara Winery) produces Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay at the estate winery in Sta. Rita Hills. The 65 acres was first planted in 1971 at the western tip of the Santa Ynez Valley. The new winemaker Bruce McGuire had been working in the Napa Valley but heard of some exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir being produced in Santa Barbara County, the latter by Richard Sanford (see our producer ALMA ROSA), and one of his first suggestions to Pierre Lafond was to plant some Pinot Noir. The property is in the heart of Pinot Noir country, with soil and microclimates exceedingly favourable to that fickle grape variety.

In the spring of 2002, Lafond Winery releases its Sta. Rita Hill wines made exclusively from grapes grown in the Santa Rita Hills appellation. These 3 wines, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay immediately received 10 medals between them, and are still collecting new awards at every new vintage. We are very proud and happy to be able to present both Lafond Pinot Noir and Lafond Syrah in our assortment.
