Château Carsin is located in the ”Côtes de Bordeaux”, literally “the hills of Bordeaux”. These hills run along the eastern bank of the Garonne upstream from the city of Bordeaux. They are essentially composed of clay-limestone soil, with gravel topsoil.
When Château Carsin was purchased by the Finnish wine enthusiast Juha Berglund in the early 1990, New World wines were becoming very popular. Mr Berglund had been working in Australia in the late 80’s and learned about the winemaking in the New World. A totally modern winery was ordered to Carsin all the way from Australia and for 13 years the head winemaker was Australian Mandy Jones.
Today, the winemaking philosophy and the work at Château Carsin has become more traditional. Juha wants to present the authentic characters of the soils in each different vineyards. For example, he experiments with working to the rhythms of the moon and the stars and an increased part of the vineyards has become biodynamic. He searches for the roots of the wines by planting his vineyards with historic grape varieties of Bordeaux such as Sauvignon Gris, Malbec, Carmenère and Petit Verdot but also Bordeaux classics like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
The wines are becoming very popular and Château Carsin Cuvee Noire 2010 received a GOLD award in the Swedish magazine “Världens Viner” tasting (June 2015) for Bordeaux wines <200 SEK.
